SOAR Discovery
Southern Oceans Archaeological Research Inc. (SOAR) discovered the Industry site in 1997 while examining targets found during a Florida State survey of the waters around St. Augustine in 1995. (Large View)
In 1995, Southern Oceans Archaeological Research, Inc. (SOAR) surveyed the waters around St. Augustine with a magnetometer to detect large targets. No ground truth, or on-site, testing was done, however. In 1997 SOAR, received a grant from the Florida Department of State, State Historic Preservation Board to re-survey and dive on the larger targets found in the 1995 survey. It was during this process that the Industry site was discovered. The wreck site was initially known as the Tube Site, before being positively identified as the Industry through archival research. The Tube Site includes 8 gun tubes, their concretions, and several anchors discovered in 1997. As a result of this work, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum funded three successive field seasons to investigate this site. Further magnetometer surveys and some ground truth tests were done in preparation for these investigations.
