Centropyxis

Here is a bird's eye view of a Centropyxis, which is a bacteriovore testate amoeba (an amoeba that eats bacteria), observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). One of the defining characteristics of a Centropyxis, a test (shell) with 5 or 6 spiny protrusions, is easily identifiable in this micrograph. The amoeba is upside down in this micrograph. When alive, the amoeba's pseudopodia would come out of the aperture (circular opening in the center of the amoeba) enabling the amoebae to crawl around on a surface.
