Conclusion

The shipwrecks of “The Sunken Fleet of 1758” have provided underwater archaeologists with a great opportunity to gain insight into construction details of these colonial watercraft, how they were used in this conflict, and to uncover more details about the soldiers' daily life in this era.

In addition to the history of these important vessels, this exhibit shows the evolution of underwater archaeology as a scientific field of study. Early explorations by sport divers and amateur underwater archaeologists were followed by increasingly sophisticated efforts to accurately record scientific data. Interdisciplinary projects such as the recent Art / Science Initiative demonstrates that new ways of looking at "old" sites continue to develop. The military nature of the sunken vessels' story may be over but their role as an educational tool continues.
