Ghana is located in western Africa in a region known as the Gold Coast. It has a history of maritime cultural exchange from the time of early African kingdoms, the Atlantic Slave Trade, to the modern era (Image courtesy of Google Maps).

Project Background

This exhibit examines a traditional Ghana fishing boat that was built and donated to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology by Fulbright scholar, Mr. Ralph G. Brown. Ahimas (dugout canoes) like this were used in Ghana and areas of west Africa for fishing, sports, and travel. Boats have been the messengers and agents of culture through the centuries. They represents a distinct maritime culture for the West African region from its construction, usage, societal benefits, and historical influences.
