"The Sunken Fleet of 1758" Shipwreck Preserve at Lake George

In 1993, State of New York government agencies, local government, and not-for-profit corporations collaborated to open the first shipwreck preserve for visiting SCUBA divers in the Empire State. One of the three sites in the "Submerged Heritage Preserves" system is called "The Sunken Fleet of 1758." This site is the "Wiawaka Bateaux" plus a replica bateau sunk there in 1997; the latter to show divers what an intact bateau would look like. A second shipwreck preserve is called “The Forward Underwater Classroom,” and the third shipwreck preserve is called “Land Tortoise: A 1758 Floating Gun Battery.” A mooring system, trail lines, and underwater signage at the shipwreck preserves provide SCUBA divers with the opportunity to "Dive Into History" and explore historic shipwrecks in a "controlled public access" environment.
