Student curators measure the dugout canoe.

Examining the Ahima

In addition to viewing the canoe, student curators also measured several aspects of its dimensions. Measurements were taken of the length, width, and depth of the boat so as to better understand its overall shape. This exercise allowed the student curators to see the amount of detail that goes into recording and studying artifacts.

Graduate student Tyler Bailey, shown here, and several student curators worked on creating a makeshift post to establish a baseline for measuring the Ghana canoe. The data provided by the measurements was used for creating the floor plan for the physical exhibit.
