With its fine protected harbor, St. George's Parish has been bustling with maritime activity for four centuries. Clusters of wrecked and abandoned ships exist at Meyer’s Wharf in Convict Bay, Myer’s Slip, Mullet Bay, and Grotto Bay. In addition to loss due to catastrophe, ships often came to St. George’s Harbor that were damaged at sea. The cost of repairs in Bermuda often hindered the shipowners’ ability to make repairs, resulting in conversion of ships into seaborne trailers (lighters), or dockside storage vessels (hulks). Others were reused as wharves and breakwaters. These abandonments now provide an excellent archaeological record of the vessels used around the island and also preserve evidence of the seafaring activities of Bermudians and their international visitors.
