Meyer's Wharf Shipwrecks
A view of the steel four-masted barque Taifun built as Ancon at Greenock in 1894 by famed shipbuilders Russell and Company. Eventually bought by Norwegian merchants and renamed Norstjerne and eventually passed to Swedish interests (becoming Taifun), the 236 foot vessel was damaged at sea with a load of Dover Chalk and was eventually abandoned off Meyer's Wharf around 1918 (Video by Program in Maritime Studies, ECU).

Meyer's Wharf was a ship repair yard and iron foundry, located on Convict Bay Road on the east side of St. George's. Historical and archaeological research currently suggests that at least nine vessels and much wreck debris litters the Meyer's Wharf vicinity. Above the water, two old ships, the Swedish bark Taifun and the composite iron and wood vessel HMS Ready are most visible. Beneath the water, many more vessels await rediscovery and study.
