Research

Project research at libraries, museums and archives occurs before, during, and after field work. For the vessels lost around St. George’s Harbor, research in the United States and Bermuda obtained information regarding the potential number of shipwrecks, as well as their place of origin, owners, cargoes, and circumstances of loss. This information often helps researchers recognize traces of historical events in ship debris, analyze the processes that transform functional watercraft into archaeological sites, and assists in their identification. After fieldwork, research resumes in order to answer unanswered questions, and enrich our understanding of what happened to the ships throughout their lives.
