Early Discoveries of "The Sunken Fleet of 1758"

As early as the 19th century, published accounts described onlookers seeing bateau shipwrecks in the lake's shallows. The June 10, 1893 issue of the Lake George Mirror newspaper reported that four sunken bateaux were visible on the lake bottom. The July 8, 1893 Lake George Mirror recorded that Henry L. Sherman "has in his possession a small piece of one of the sunken bateaux, sunk in the broad Lake off the Fort William Henry peer. Some winters ago a piece of plank was pulled from the side of the craft..."
